Yoga and Essential Oils

This year has been hard, and I mean really hard. We have all dealt with changes in our lives - from unemployment, to being furloughed, to losing friends and family. When I went home to work in March of 2020, I had no idea that I would be working from home for 16 months. When you live alone, working from home can be hard. I know those of you who worked from home with kids probably can't relate to this, but that's ok. For me, I couldn't wait for the next Zoom meeting so I could actually see someone's face and talk with them - even if it was through a computer. I can honestly say that while working from home, I worked more hours. I didn't have commute time where I thought about what I was going to do that day and then decompressed at the end of the day on my way home. There wasn't a "start" and "end" time to the day where everyone is arriving to the office and grabbing coffee in the breakroom or saying their goodbyes after a long day. It was easy to start my day when I woke up and end my day when it was dark and I was tired.

I say all this because it's easy to become complacent in other areas of our lives when one area takes over. Work became important because I was tracking executive orders from our state and health department and making sure I did what was necessary for our team to stay safe. I learned a lot about myself and how I work. I'm grateful for my dog that kept me company for so many months and kept me going outside to enjoy the day rather than spending countless hours behind my computer screens (which I also did a lot of).

I tried starting yoga during that first year and it didn't stick. I really needed something to help me feel more balanced and also feel like I had control over and in my life. I'm writing this blog today to share that I am trying again but this time I'm doing it with a plan and my arsenal of essential oils.  Have you heard of yoga with Adriene? If you haven't, you should definitely check out her youtube channel.  All of her yoga videos are free! This year she created Move: A 30 Day Yoga Journey and I have joined. The best thing is that it is free (as always), there will be modifications for beginners, and I can go as deep as I want to go.
Will you join me?

Let's face it, essential oils and yoga belong together. They are both amazing wellness tools that can help you achieve a more balanced and happy lifestyle.  Used properly, they can be a beautiful compliment to a yoga practice and a powerful part of your yoga classes.

Here are some ideas that I will be using in my yoga practice while integrating essential oils and the doTERRA Yoga Collection

Essential Oil Routine Examples
  1. Begin with doTERRA Breathe.  To connect yourself more deeply to your breathing, place a drop or two in your palms and bring them in a tent to your face. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing.
  2. Use Peppermint to get going. Place a few drops at the top of the mat and create a circle. Peppermint works a lot like a mantra; it helps you to focus and has calming properties. It also is a great reminder to breathe and a perfect match for Pranayama to promote clear breathing, open airways and clarity of mind. Place one drop into the palms of hands, cup the hands with your eyes closed, place your hands in front of your face and take 3 deep breaths.
  3. Use doTERRA Balance right before corpse pose. Place the oil on your feet to help you relax into the pose.
  4. Using Lavender or Roman Chamomile just before settling into a position for relaxation will encourage focus and calming of the body and mind.
  5. Using Wild Orange will inspire creativity and support a positive mood. Place a drop on the palms of your hands, cup your hands and breathe in before a pose / Asana. It is great to use doing Downward Dog and Bridge Pose.
  6. Use these essential oils to assist in letting go of negativity and to open the emotional body - Frankincense, Bergamot, Clary Sage, and Lavender. Try them out when you are Standing in Crescent Moon or Standing in Forward Bend.
  7. For grounding postures like Warrior 11 and Sukhasana or Easy Pose try tree based oils to help connect you to the earth and become present in the moment - Cedarwood, Vetiver, Sandalwood.
