Essential Oils for Love and Romance

Did you know that smell can elicit powerful emotions? To test this, I want you to think of someone special to you - this can be anyone. When you think of them, what smells come to mind?

For me, when I think of my mom who passed away in 1994, I think of Soft Musk. Yes, Avon Soft Musk. This was her go-to perfume and she loved it! When I think of my mom's father, who also passed away several years ago, I think of the smell of his pipe (even though he didn't smoke his pipe for many many years) and onions. As a child, I remember him smoking it regularly and I remember the pouch his tobacco was in. It was a very sweet and pungy scent.

Aromatherapy can play a powerful role in relationships - in fact, essential oils are so good at sparking passionate feelings that they're believed to be aphrodisiacs!

There are several essential oils that will help you spice up your Valentine's day that are perfect for love and romance.
  •  Ylang Ylang
  •  Rose
  •  Sandalwood
  •  Clary Sage
  •  Lavender
  •  Jasmine
  •  Ginger
  •  Neroli
  •  Cinnamon
  •  Passon

Ylang Ylang
Ylang Ylang has been used for centures in religious and wedding ceremones. Often the flowers were scattered on the beds of newlyweds. Ylang Ylang is used to create a calm, positive atmosphere and is frequently used in luxurious hair and skin products for this scent and nourishing and protective properties.  This floral scent is also known to have a relaxing effect {source} and has been studied to understand its use in suicide prevention {source}. While Ylang Ylang has a strong scent (one drop is all you need), it pairs well with citrus oils such as Bergamot and Grapefruit, and other floral oils such as Geranium, and earthy oils like Vetiver.

Rose
Rose is known as the "Queen of Oils" for its highly sought after aroma and powerful topical and emotional benefits. Rose essential oil has other benefits too! Not only does it have a calming effect {source}, it can also create an environment of relaxation {source} that can help cultivate intimacy.

Sandalwood
Sandalwood was traditionally used as an incense in religious ceremonies to enhance meditation because of its grounding effects.  Its woody aroma is warm, inviting, and has been known to soothe nerves and stress {source}. Sandalwood has also been known to increase mood and promote higher levels of arousal and desire {source}.

Clary Sage
The main chemical component in Clary Sage essential oil is linalyl acetate - part of the esters group - making it one of the most relaxing, soothing, and balancing essential oils. Clary Sage is known to be useful in women's menstrual and reproductive systems {source} {source} by heping to ease tension and muscle cramps along with providing seductive and aphrodisiac activity.  Oooh La La!

Lavender
Lavender is a standby essential oil because it's practically good for everything! Research has shown that Lavender essential oil is good at reducing anxiety {source}, improving sleep, stabalizing mood, and increasing sexual desire {source}.

Jasmine
Regarded as the "King of Flowers", Jasmine has a highly fragrant aroma making this an ideal essential oil to use as a personal fragrance. Jasmine is also known to boost your mood {source} while promoting a healthy-looking, glowing complexion. Jasmine is highly sought after for its ability to stir feelings of euphoria and confidence.

Ginger
Most people know that Ginger is great at aiding digestion and easing occasional nausea. However, it can also be good at decreasing blood pressure {source}. The warm, earthy nature of Ginger essential oil makes it useful for massage and is said to be very arousing. It is also believed that Ginger can help with building feelings of courage and confidence.

Neroli
Neroli is derived from the flowers of the bitterorange tree and instills relaxation, uplifts mood, and reduces feelings of anxiousness {source}. This is a great essential oil to use by itself as a light perfume to set the mood.

Cinnamon
Cinnamon has a long history of culinary uses from deserts, to hot drinks, and even chewing gum! Cinnamon is considered a "hot" essential oil, so we always dilute it with a carrier oil when using it...er...especially around sensitive parts. Cinnamon offers numerous health benefits, including increased blood flow and improved circulation.  Cinnamon has been studied for its ability to improve erectile function {source} and increase testosterone levels, sperm count, and sperm mobility {source}.
This HOT oil may help you and your partner prolong your night of intimacy.

Passion
doTERRA's Passion essential oil combines several of our other oils for love and intimacy (Cinnamon, Ginger, Sandalwood, and Jasmine) to provide spicy and warm aroma. This inspiring blend will help you rekindle excitment in your life as well as discover renewed joy.  Go ahead, roll Passion Touch everywhere you want to be touched! (sssizzle hot!)

Now that we know all about our essential oils that will help us to promote love and intimacy, let's find out ALL the ways we can use them!

Let's talk Massage Oil for Couples

Massage oils made with essential oils are a great way to enhance libido, stimulate arousal, and just have fun!!

We recommend using food-grade oil as a base/carrier oil for massage (for obvious reasons), and high quality essential oils such as doTERRA essential oils, with any combination of the above essential oils.  Feel free to get creative!

Note: Be cautious about using massage oils on the genital area that can be more sensitive than other areas of our body. Always do a spot test on your forearm 24 hours before using essential oils for the first time. Also, using some oils, such as coconut oil, may decrease the efficacy of condoms.

How Can I Make My Own Massage Oil?

First, I recommend using a dropper bottle or an old 15 mL essential oil bottle that you have cleaned out.  You don't want to be scramblig around trying to figure out how much to dilute at a time like this!

My favorite carrer oils are:
Grapeseed Oil (psst! I get mine at Aldi)

Here is a dilution chart you can save for DIY Massage Oils with Essential Oils

With essential oils, a little goes a long way (just like adding milk to your favorite baking recipe).

So, to start, you will use 2-4 drops of essential oils per teaspoon of carrier oil to make your massage blend.

You can use any combination of essential oils from our list above.

Carrier Oil Amount           Essential Oil Drops
          10 mL (2 tsp)          4 - 8 drops
          15 mL (3 tsp)          6 - 12 drops
          20 mL (4 tsp)          8 - 16 drops
          30 mL (1 oz)          12 - 24 drops

Making your own blend is easy!  Add your essentials of choice (from the list above) into the dropper bottle, then fill the rest with your carrier oil.  Make sure to add the lid before shaking gently. To use, shake gently, and apply. (keep by your nightstand for easy access)

How Can I Make an Intimacy Roller Bottle with Essential Oils?

Similar to making a massage blend, we will start by adding our essential oils to the roller bottle, then filling the rest with your carrier oil of choice.  Press the top on and gently roll or shake your bottle.

You can use your new blend in all of these places:
  • Your abdomen
  • The inside of your wrists
  • Behind your ear
  • The back of your neck
  • The inside of your thighgs
  • The inside of your ankles
  • Your neck (like you would apply perfume)

How Can I Make a Room or Linen Spray Using Essential oils?
Room and linen sprays are one of my favorite things to make!  They're super simple and pack a punch of beautiful aroma. Start out by using glass spray bottles or your can find some essential oil friendly plastic spray bottles from doTERRA.

If you are using the 30 mL bottles from doTERRA, here is your basic recipe:
  • 1/2 TBS Witch Hazel (this acts as an emulsifier)
  • 5-10 drops Essential Oil
  • Fill the rest with distilled water
