All-Natural Bug Spray

I don't have to tell you that the mosquitoes are BAD this year - you've probably already experienced first hand being swarmed by them.  I know I sure have!

I'm not a huge fan of bug sprays you can find at the store so I make my own all-natural bug spray that repels that pesty mosquitoes.  AND - this bug spray is safe for every member of the family, including pets and kids!

I keep several bottles of my all-natural bug spray handy all summer long to take along on hikes, camping, or just hanging out in the backyard.

All-Natual Bug Spray is Safe

Knowing exactly what is in your bug spray is so comforting. While there is conflicting research on DEET and its neurological affects on the body, I feel safe knowing that my body isn't absorving toxic chemicals that can disrupt hormones and cause a myriad of other unwanted health concerns.  Our skin is our largest organ and whatever we put on our skin gets absorbed into our bloodstream.

All-Natural Bug Spray is Budget Friendly
Making your own bug spray is a very cost cost effective option because you can refill your spray bottle over and over again with your bottles of essential oils. You may feel like it’s expensive because of the initial investment in the essential oils.  Keep in mind, that per drop, the essential oils are only a few cents.  So, the grand total is quite reasonably priced.  The cost per spray bottle is quite low – less than what you’ll pay for anything in the store!

So, let's get to the recipe already!
I have several recipes I want to share with you as I know that we sometimes run out of an essential oil. Knowing that you can substitute another essential oil is also comforting.

For each recipe below you will need the following:
RECIPES
All-Natural Bug Spray Recipe #1
($3.50 to make excluding cost of spray bottle and witch hazel)
All-Natural Bug Spray Recipe #2
($3.20 to make excluding cost of spray bottle and witch hazel)
All-Natural Bug Spray Recipe #3
($3.35 to make excluding cost of spray bottle and witch hazel)
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Add the Witch Hazel to your spray bottle.
  2. Add the Essential Oils next.  The Witch Hazel acts as an emulsifier so you will want to give your spray bottle a little swirl after adding your Essential Oils to mix them together.
  3. Fill the rest with water - tap water is fine.
  4. To use, gently shake, then spray on exposed skin while avoiding eyes.

If you're not a DIY'er (and let's face it, we all get busy and we have the best of intentions, but we just don't do it), you can always purchase doTERRA's outdoor blend, Terrashield. It comes in a pre-made spray or in a 15 mL essential oil bottle.  I love having these bottles around too!  Once it's empty, I replace it with one of my recipes from above.

I have also fallen in love with doTERRA's Pilot Max diffuser. The Pilot Max diffuser is rechargeable and you can take it anywhere! This is perfect for when you are sitting out on your patio or while you're camping.  Just add a few drops of Citronella essential oil, sit back and relax! You can also try any combination of the Essential Oils above.
